Creating Commercial Magic Behind the Scenes
As SPACEGOODS' commercial photographer, I'm excited to share a behind-the-scenes look at how I create those striking product images that have become synonymous with the brand. Working alongside SPACEGOODS founder Matthew Kelly, we've developed a signature style that captures the essence of their innovative products through commercial photography that pushes creative boundaries.
Those clean, minimalist SPACEGOODS product photos you've seen? They're the result of intricate planning and hours of sophisticated post-production work.
The journey of each SPACEGOODS product shoot begins long before the camera starts clicking. In my studio, you'll see an elaborate setup that's anything but simple – multiple light sources, carefully positioned supports, and precision mounting equipment all work together to achieve that signature floating effec. This complex system ensures each product is captured at exactly the right angle, with perfect lighting that enhances every detail.
But what's fascinating about commercial product photography, especially for brands like SPACEGOODS, is how the most minimalist final images often require the most complex setups. In the behind-the-scenes video, you'll notice the intricate web of supports and lighting equipment needed to create that seemingly effortless floating effect. Every clamp, every light, every reflection is precisely calculated to serve the final vision.
The real transformation happens in post-production. My work as SPACEGOODS' photographer continues in Photoshop, where hours are spent meticulously removing support structures, blending multiple exposures, and fine-tuning shadows and reflections. This detailed compositing process is what gives SPACEGOODS' product images their characteristic "frozen in time" appearance – a look that's become integral to their brand identity.
Working with Matthew Kelly has pushed me to constantly innovate in my approach to commercial photography. Each SPACEGOODS product presents its own unique challenges, requiring creative problem-solving to achieve that perfect balance of realism and surrealism that makes these images so compelling.
